| 2000s pop superstar, Nelly Furtado is back with her first single, since 2012, “Islands of Me”. Famous for her strutting duet “Promiscious” with Timbaland and breakout karaoke rambler “I'm Like A Bird”, Nelly Furtado has carved out a path of her own, since her debut in 2000. The song seems like a natural (or unnatural?) progression for the singer, who has never confined herself to one genre. Nothing made more clear then her transition from folk pop to steamy hip hop. The singer hasn't charted, since her feature on the K'naan track “Is Anybody Out There” and she hasn't had a hit since “Give It To Me” back in 2007. She has some ground to make up and some hurdles to overcome. |   |
“Islands of Me” sounds good, but so did her 2012 single “Parking Lot” and that didn't chart. This song is the first preview from her upcoming 2017 album Ride. The song sounds warm and it's an inviting anthem of self motivation. It has that building electronic bounce, without ever delivering a drop popular with the format. It gets better with every listen. Could it be the hit that puts her back on the chart? Other contemporaries such as Fergie and Gwen Stefani have released similarly strong tracks without gaining traction on radio. At this point it's a guessing game of what will connect with the Top 40 listener, but it's a welcome return to form for those who have missed the singer's presence.
