Be completely shocked. I don't like musicals. I know the horror. I am just not a fan. I do dig Mamma Mia! and Grease. As a general rule, though, do not take me to see a musical. I will not enjoy it. It is not going to happen. There is just something about men breaking out into unnecessary dance and song that irritates me. I do like for some of my plot to be spoken to me.
I thought I would love Into The Woods. I did not. I'm so sorry. I really wanted that little bitch Red Riding Hood to die, but it just did not happen. The winning point for me was Meryl Streep and that sexy blue hair. My god she killed it. |
Although, that's a lie. It's actually based off of this real life movie Diner. That apparently is important. It has Mickey Rourke, Paul Reiser, and Kevin Bacon in it. Is it weird that I think Kevin Bacon is kind of hot. Not the fifty year old Kevin Bacon, but the eighties Footloose Kevin Bacon. He was like this awkwardly, self assured, lanky sex symbol. If I could go back in time. I would have me some Kevin Bacon.
So, why am I interested? It is not even on Broadway. At the moment it's doing a sold out run in Washington DC. It is not up for the Grammy's. This is not a Cyndi Lauper Kinky Boots situation. Let me tell you who did the music, though.
Sheryl Crow. My queen. My fave. Whenever they release the cast soundtrack to this musical I will buy it. The music received rave reviews as did the musical itself. Critics liked the inclusion of a female story line. It made it more universal, then the one sided male perspective. This is right in Sheryl Crow's alley.
The music is all fifties doo wop and rock n roll. I have no doubt she slayed it. I think this is a great career move for her. You know her last album Feels Like Home didn't do so well. I mean I bought it, but it was not the resounding commercial success of seven times platinum Tuesday Night Music Club by any stretch. |
At the moment it is only in Washington DC, but it's sold out. It will probably make its way to a few more cities where it's tweaked, before it ends up in New York. Wins a few Tonys. Then comes to a city near you. Which, is why I am here to tell you be prepared in 2016 to educate yourself.
You'll be sitting there around the water cooler and someone will mention Diner. You will remember my beautiful glowing words and knowledgeably talk about how much you've wanted to see this show. Maybe you'll get a promotion and all the time you waste reading my blog will be justified. I am looking out for you.
