Her name is Maria Grazaia Chiuri and she's hoping to take Dior into the 21st century, while maintaining the “Dior woman”. She takes inspiration not only from when Christian Dior helmed the empire, but also from past directors such as Raf Simons and John Galliano. Dior has Chiuri's undivided attention, something it's past director's struggled with while controlling their own fashion empires or in the case of John Galliano the drunken racist and anti-semetic remarks that cost him his job at Dior. |
Chiuri is drawing on mainstream culture and Dior silohuettes. Take the new Dior shirt that reads “We Should All Be Feminists”. Made famous by Beyonce's inclusion in “Flawless” the quote comes from the writings of feminist icon Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi. Feminism has become trendy in fashion also being an underlying theme behind the clothes designed by Versace. It seems feminism is having a new wave in Fashion.
More then qualified to run this name ship empire, Chiuri has worked successfully under the tutelage of other major labels such as Fendi and Valentino. Dior is certainly in safe hands. She has even taken to updating John Galliano's famous “J'Adore Dior” into “J'Adior”. My high school French is limited and I can't say I understand the new translation, but every good idea needs an update once in a while.
