 | 1971 was Carly Simon's breakout year. She struck recording gold with her first single release, “That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be”. A wonderfully brooding song about a woman struggling with whether she wants to get married or not. Her parents don't sleep in the same bed, her friends hide the scars to make it work, but it's what she's supposed to do isn't it? The song coming from a man may have come across as contrite, but with Carly Simon lending her female perspective it became one of many top 10 hits and helped her to land a Grammy win for Best New Artist. |
Carly Simon found success with a number of songs, most notably “You're So Vain” and was famously married to singer James Taylor sharing a hit duet “Mockingbird” with one another. Her music was featured prominently in the Brittany Murphy rom-com Little Black Book as it's what her mother listened to in order to “get through the pain”.
