This is an obsession. I don't talk about Duffy very often, because she has been gone from us for a solid five years. There is nothing to talk about.
You probably have no idea who she is. Duffy is one of the three women who ushered in the British Soul, something Sam Smith is still capitalizing off of. Amy Winehouse and this unknown little girl you might know named Adele are part of this.

Amy Winehouse at the time was the big breakout star in the United States. What with “Rehab” and Back to Black. Adele pushed her first album with “Chasing Pavements” before she hit it big with “Rolling In The Deep” and the successive domino effect of 21. Duffy had “Mercy” and a platinum selling Rockferry. “Mercy” was even covered on Glee. Back when that meant something.

If you lived in the UK. These women were inescapable. If you are from the United States of America that answer is a defiant no. My personal favorite from these three was always Duffy. Amy Winehouse next and Adele third. I'm that person who didn't love 21. I can't tell you the number of people who wanted to shoot me for that opinion and the number of people who told me I had no taste in music. I proceeded to read them and articulately discuss the subject citing Amy and Duffy as superior to Adele in every way. Even going as far as to say Feist was better, knowing full well that they had no idea that Feist did not fall under the category of British soul.

Where Adele had colossal success with her second album. Duffy did not. It had one single. It bankrupted her record label and five years later we don't have new Duffy music.
Her second album Endlessly needed more then one single. It was a solid record. It was the first album I actively anticipated. I'm actually listening to it right now as I write this article. Five years later and I still love it. |

Duffy has retreated since the relative commercial failure of Endlessly. It still was certified gold in the United Kingdom. She has stated that she doesn't like the public spotlight and this might very well mean we'll never have new Duffy music.

Then, 2013 comes around and record producer Albert Hammond reveals that he is working with Duffy. It is now 2015 and where is Duffy? Our beautiful, wailing Welsh soulstress. She's going to get it right this time. I think that's what she's waiting for. Even, if the new music isn't commercial, it's going to be critically lauded.

My level of love for her is endless. I have one poster and it's of her. I appreciate her musicality. How her lyrics are about being a strong woman who “stands up for herself”. That she doesn't shy away from talking about being a single mother or even the more scandalous teacher/student love affair that is “My Boy”.
She is also stunningly beautiful. That's just an added bonus. Adele is also a fan. If I can't convince you that Duffy is worth it and Adele can't convince you. I don't know what I can do. |
