I got some culture in the Valentine’s Day weekend 2016. I finally listened to the Green Day album American Idiot. The critically lauded, six times platinum, five top 20 hits producing juggernaut. That’s what I finally got around to listening to.
Green Day is the sound of a band full of teenage angst. They sound as if they were built to rock the nineties. Something they did with diamond certified Dookie. Their music is effortlessly punk rock in a way that only Green Day can be I also saw the musical that day. The album American Idiot has its own set of characters and is its own rock opera. It was meant for Broadway. I loved seeing little kids there. As someone who wasn’t a fan of Green Day, I still knew that one of their favorite words was “fuck”. |
That Saturday, the 13th I had a very R rated experience. Saw Deadpool in the morning. My father didn’t appreciate the profanity laced with sexual innuendo, but the musical for American Idiot topped it off.

Let me tell you up front that I loved the musical. The original ran for 422 shows. I had no idea what the fuck was happening. I understood the premise. There are three disillusioned boys, growing up in a Bush dominated democracy. They are all restless. One joins the army. One gets a girl pregnant and the other one loses the only girl he ever cared about.
I didn’t know what was happening. It was an hour and a half of actors head banging and fighting the power. I probably would have gotten more of the condemnation of Bush era America if I hadn’t been a young wallowing child during the 9/11 attacks. I still enjoyed the musical. |

There were swear words and hard rock moments and all of the famous ballads. “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “Wake Me When September Ends” were all present, peaking at number 5 and number 8 respectively during their chart runs.

The most exciting moment was the vigorous sex scene. First the girls bra came off. I wasn’t at the right angle to see her nipples, but I’m sure they were very nice. The true surprise was when the male lead shook off his underwear. He had a very nice creamy pale ass. It must be so strange having 20 of our closest cast mates knowing what your penis looks like.
The album was a resounding success on every front. It’s probably the highlight of the Green Day catalogue. It was their career renewal after steady decline in musical relevancy. |
Green Day is also home to everyone’s favorite bisexual Billie Joe Armstrong. Who if I remember correctly vowed to destroy the concept of “pop punk”. I’m hoping he hasn’t heard about 5 Seconds of Summer.
