Ghostbusters (1984)

The Ghostbusters got a 21st century remake this year with the blockbuster smash led by an all star cast. It was the reworking of the inventive supernatural comedy first made in 1984.

The original film grossed close to $300 million dollars worldwide against a $30 million dollar budget and produced a number one hit for Ray Parker Jr. The self titled theme song that still has people yelling, “Who you gonna call?” “GHOSTBUSTERS!”

The all male cast was supported by Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Rick Mornais. Signourney Weaver comes in as the “Kevin” character protrayed by Chris Hemsworth in the remake. There was a successful sequel and two cartoon based TV shows. The Ghostbusters are legends.

A third film had been planned for the original installments . It suffered script changes and discontentment from castmates and studio heads for over a decade, but was officially shelved with the death of Harold Ramis

The original Ghostbusters gave rave reviews of the new film and you can find Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Sigourney Weaver all making cameos.

Blood. Cursing. Testosterone.

The Powerpuff Girls are made of three things: sugar, spice, and everything nice. A similar concept applies for Quentin Tarantino films. Except instead of sugar it's blood and spice is the fuck word and everything nice is everything testosterone charged. But, it's basically the same thing.

I was thinking about Quentin Tarantino. He had that new movie The Hateful Eight that came out on Christmas. One of my dear male friends wanted to see it and I told him to hit me up if he needed company. The hitting up did not happen and I still haven't seen it.

Until recently I haven't had a lot of experience with Quentin Tarantino films. I knew the name, but I am an innocent wall flower. Of course I saw Django Unchained, because everyone was talking about it. A little bloody at the end, Dicaprio was robbed, what more do you need to know.

Quentin Tarantino is making some kind of statement. Do I know what it is? Never. I just enjoy his movies and try not to think about what he's getting across. Is he critiquing masculinity? Does he like women? Are gays a good thing? All I know is Uma Thurman looks good in a yellow skintight leather suit.

Prince William has been introducing me to his films. He showed me the iconic Pulp Fiction. Uma Thurman was there. She taught me not to snort heroin. Samuel L. Jackson is there, Bruce Willis makes an appearance, John Travolta is losing his hair. It's a great movie.

Film Director, Writer, and Actor Quentin Tarantino

The entire plot is convoluted and out of order. A staple in Quentin Tarantino's filmography. It's what gives him movie the appeal to watch them again. If you haven't seen Pulp Fiction you should.

Quentin Tarantino also puts in a guest spot. He was surprisingly cuter then I expected. He puts in a lot of appearances in his films. He was iconically blown up in Django Unchained.

The Kill Bill franchise was another mainstream win for him. This is where my love for Uma Thurman came from. She's dirty and sexy and dirty and it's just hot. This woman climbs out of a grave to come back and kill some bitches. She kills all of Lucy Liu's army to get to her.

As of now there are two Kill Bill movies. Spoiler, Uma Thurman does kill Bill. Who I might add is me. I am Bill. He shoots her in the head and tries to kill her, because he's upset with her for leaving him. And, when she finally meets him at the end he says that he “might have over reacted.”

Literally me. Canon me.

There's the potential for a third film. I'm ready. I hope it comes. Quentin Tarantino better not let me down. Practically all of Quentin Tarantino's films are iconic. Even if Warner told me that Reservoir Dogs was disappointing.

Quentin Tarantino is one of the most iconic film directors. Like Spielberg and Scorsese. He has a certain level of fame that's hard to come by for a man behind the camera. Audiences also know exactly what to expect when they spend $10.25 to get into see one of his movies. If that's not dedication and a true fan base, I don't know what is.

Death Comes As The End

One thing we've learned from every horror flick we've ever sat down to watch is that death comes as the end. Even, if you ostensibly survive the horror movie some day you have to stop running.

That's a fact that Wes Craven put to test. He was an American writer, film director, producer, and sometimes actor that pushed the slasher genre to it's peak. These movies burn bright and hot until one or two teenagers manage to outwit the killer and are summarily rescued.

An early predecessor to these type of movies would be Alfred Hitchcock's Pyscho, although only two brutal murder does take away the pyschotic tendencies typical of a slasher. This sub genre is also referred to as “body count films” and “dead teenager films”. Titles that more clearly remove Pyscho from the running.

Wes Craven did not pioneer this type of horror film. Slasher's as their own sub genre started around 1974. Black Christmas is largely regarded as the first influential slasher. It features a group of sorority girls who are stalked and murdered over the holiday season. It almost sounds like the December version of Scream Queens

At this time Wes Craven was having little to do with pushing the slasher genre forward. His early career focused on porn. This man went hard or he went home. His involvement has been linked to one of the most famous pornographic films, Deep Throat.

During the seventies Wes Craven was primarily working with the concept of “exploitation horror”. This is just a fancy way of saying that he capitalized on current trends or fascinations. That would involve lurid material that often involved sex and violence. Both of The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes are cult classics now. The first film dealt with two girls who were taken into the woods and tortured by a murderous gang.

That's what I call quality family entertainment.

Wes Craven really made his name with the slasher genre. He may not have pioneered it, but he certainly pushed it to it's outer limits that it could fit in. Only two other slasher franchises have achieved the anonymity that Wes Craven has done. See any of the Halloween or Friday The 13th movies.

You can thank Wes Craven for launching Johnny Depp in his first major acting role when he casted him in A Nightmare On Elm Street. The film series has had nine revisitations of Freddy Krueger. And, let's not forget when Freddy met Jason in the crossover death match of Freddy vs. Jason. Which, is honestly just cinema gold.

In my own humble homosexual opinion, Scream is Wes Craven's masterpiece. He resurrected a sub genre when it was dying. Slasher's were dead. Horror films weren't doing it. Then, you bring out Scream, which is the most self aware melodrama. It's fantastic. It plays with all the conventions and what's more it knows it.

The first film is the best. Bloody and good. David Arquette's there. Courtney Cox is having fun. Drew Barrymore stops by. Wes Craven makes a guest appearance. It's classic. It's legacy is still here. If you didn't catch the television reboot of Scream on MTV you missed out. Although, Wes Craven was reportedly disappointed in the “change of masks”. I think the updated one is ten times more horrifying. Of course there is that garish comic originality to the first one. I don't know who to side with.

Right now Fox is playing with it's own eighties inspired slasher series Scream Queens. It would make Wes Craven proud. Scary. Self deprecating and funny as hell.

Unfortunately, Wes Craven passed away this summer at the age of 76 after contracting brain cancer. At least he'll always live on in the recesses of our nightmares.

Something Borrowed, Something Blue, & Something To Read

I didn't spend a solid two days reading a book to not tell you about it. I've finally gotten around to reading Emily Giffin's Something Blue. I swear I thought her last name was Griffin not Giffin. Emily Giffin is a queen in the category of romance novelist.

I love her work. It's quick, fast paced, and always delectable in a tasteful way. I own a few copies of her books. All of them are courtesy of my older sister. Her husband forced her to get rid of all of her books in exchange for an e-reader. Now she has a kindle and a non existent book case.

My mother was the recipient of some of her books. My mother only reads Christian fiction and I came into contact with two novels by Giffin. Her breakout novel Something Borrowed and Baby Proof (my former personal favorite).

Now I would love to delve in the intricacies and of her other works like Heart of the Matter and Love The One You're With, but we have a star filled movie and two novels to tear apart.

The first book I read by her was Something Borrowed. The one that had a feature film tie in. It was the romantic comedy of summer 2011. I saw it twice in theaters. Once with the twins and the second with my great Aunt. The last time I watched it was when I was on my 19th birthday after my mother bought it for me at Target.

Now Something Borrowed tells the story of Rachel stealing her best friend Darcy's fiancee Dex days before their wedding day. Talk about sharing. Now Rachel does come across more sympathetic then my little blurb suggests. This was Emily Giffin's first novel and frankly not her best. It was however enjoyable, although I never quite gelled with the lead love interest.

He might have been attractive and wealthy, but he was an ass. He was indecisive and I was not about him. He needed to get his shit together. It was the same thing in the movie. Each time I read the book or watched the movie I hoped she would end up with her best friend Ethan. I didn't want Rachel with Dex. She was too pure of a cinnamon roll for him. Needless to say I didn't get what I wanted.

We were supposed to side with Rachel. After all Darcy was a bitch, but I always sided with her. I liked Darcy. I've always had a thing for the bitch.

Darcy is immaculately played by Kate Hudson in the film version. And, frankly Ginnifer Goodwin was her typical boring self as Rachel in the film. Although, shout out to her for keeping that role alive on Once Upon A Time. I think Ginnifer Goodwin is boring but she seems really sweet. I love what they did with Ethan in the movie. He was so cute and funny and if we're being honest it's the reason I started crushing as hard as I do on John Krasinski. Although, I do live for him and Emily Blunt's romance.

The lead was as dull and flat and two dimensional as could be expected. Dex was played by a reasonably attractive Colin Egglesfield. Although, I've always thought his face was somewhat disproportionate.

It might not sound like I enjoyed this movie, but it's a guilty pleasure. I live for it. If you need a good rom com please watch it. Queue it up on your Netflix.

This was not the corner piece in Emily Giffin's career in my opinion. Until I stopped at the library and picked up Something Blue. The follow up to Something Borrowed that tells the story from Darcy's perspective.

It killed my body. Darcy is vain shallow and pretentious. She's a bitch and frankly far more entertaining a story teller then Rachel was. This book was my life. Of course Darcy stumbles upon some realizations and becomes less of a self centered bitch with the perfect life.

This book slayed. I say skip reading Something Borrowed and just read Something Blue. It gives you all the background information you need and it's ten times more entertaining. I'm honestly so upset that the movie version wasn't successful enough to warrant this sequel. Because, it is more of a sequel then a retelling of the original novel.

Something Blue knocked Baby Proof off the top of my favorite books by Emily Giffin. Kate Hudson deserves to shine in a sequel. It would be so good. It could be a television series. You could put on Lifetime if they would make it. I would live.

The summer is technically over, but if you have time on your hands or a free weekend to grab a book may I suggest Emily Giffin. Pick at random or go for Something Blue. You won't go wrong.

Giorgio By Moroder

Legendary record producer. Italian. Giorgio Moroder is one of the most legendary people that you may or may not have heard of. I've brought him up a few times on the blog and mentioned him on the YouTube channel. He's worked with everyone from Blondie to Daft Punk and is an icon in his own right.

Personally, I'm surprised that he's never worked with Madonna. This is the man who built the disco sound. During the eighties Madonna had relatively small set of collaborators, but still when she went retro with Confessions on a Dancefloor I'm surprised she didn't enlist Giorgio Moroder.

The man is in his late seventies at this point. But, as he addressed in a recent song he released “74 is the new 24”. The person he most directly helped achieve international stardom was Donna Summer. He produced most of her iconic hits. The ones that everyone knows.

These range from “Bad Girls” and “Hot Stuff” from Donna's highest selling album Bad Girls to her breakout hit “Love To Love You Baby”. Her duet with Barbra Streisand “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)” was also deftly handled by his hit making skills. Other accomplishments with Donna Summer include “Last Dance”, “MacArthur Park”, “On The Radio”, and “I Feel Love”. Giorgio Moroder is the man who pioneered the sound that disco heralded.

He never found another voice that mirrored the success he had with Donna. But, he still translated his skills into multiple hits for other singers. He's the man responsible for Blondie's most iconic hit “Call Me”. This isn't that surprising as it was written for the movie American Gigolo. The highlight being Richard Gere's full frontal scene. Giorgio Moroder was the man behind the soundtrack.

In his later career he made a lot of work with the film industry, producing and writing the instrumentals that heralded a movie. Some of these included Cat People (David Bowie was in it), Flash Dance, and Over The Top.

Surprisingly enough he was not one of the main producers behind the Top Gun soundtrack. The movie that launched Tom Cruise to super stardom and the soundtrack that sold over 9 million copies in the United States. He was however the one behind two of it's most prominent hits. The song that launched Berlin “Take My Breath Away”. Otherwise known as the love theme to Top Gun and the always up tempo Kenny Loggins “Danger Zone”.

Giorgio Moroder was anything if not pliable to what different artists need. The vivacity a Kenny Loggins track produces is inherently different then what would be required of a Donna Summer hit.

He lay dormant to the pop scene for two solid decades. Then, what was old became new again. Dance music was back in. The sound Giorgio Moroder lead was back. This was made infinitely clear when Daft Punk enlisted him for their Grammy award winning Random Access Memories. The album that's sold 3.2 million copies and allowed him to return for a solo debut as a DJ.

Not only as Giorgio Moroder being hosting raves in the desert. He recently dropped his own LP in the style of Calvin Harris and David Guetta featuring numerous high profile guest stars. On Deja Vu he hits his stride with his female lead tracks.

Sia nails it with “Deja Vu”, Kylie Minogue voice throbs over an addictive bass with “Right Here, Right Now”, Charli XCX sounds every bit the rebel she is with “Diamonds”, Britney Spears nails and I dare I say improves “Tom's Diner”, but the highlight is most certainly Kelis's “Back and Forth”. Kelis hasn't sounded this good or this current since her collaboration with Calvin Harris on “Bounce”. It's gritty and ecstatic.

His two dalliances with male artists just don't land. “Tempted” gives off a filler track vibe that Cobra Starship is famous for delivering. And, the Mikky Ekko led “Don't Let Go” is far too serious for such a light and enjoyable album.

The one thing Deja Vu proves is that 74 might not be the new 24, but it certainly has circled around to it. Giorgio Moroder sounds current without sacrificing his artistic merit and with over 40 years in the industry, there's a lot.

Bling Ring Famous

A night of cheap entertainment was in order. Currently there's $25.17 in my bank account (I'm ignoring the textbooks that still need to be bought). Joyce and I caught up over a bottle of apple cider and showed each other two movies we had to see.

My choice was The Bling Ring. The first time I saw this movie was with my former best friend. It was rated R and I felt like such a rebel seeing it when I was 17. This movie is based on the Hollywood Hills Burglaries. A string of crimes committed by teenagers where they robbed celebrity homes.

This is one of those movies that is just one of my favorites. It's a little off the beaten path. It was written and directed by Sofia Coppola (the woman behind Lost In Translation). It's an indie film. This is one of those movies that showed at Cannes to great acclaim.

The cast is fairly female driven only with the androgynous chemistry of Marc (played by Israel Broussard) to break the estrogen. There are some great guest appearances by Paris Hilton, Leslie Mann, and Kirsten Dunst. Emma Watson also plays one of the thieves with her iconic line, “I want to rob.”

It's scary how accurately this movie portrays teenagers. They are fame obsessed. They have pouty mouths to have pouty mouths. They do drugs and they party. All while their parents ignore them. Sofia Coppola did an amazing job accurately portraying them. You root for them even as you know there is only one way this will end. It's a teen movie that certainly trying to say something about society. And, how we're driven.

I shamelessly own the soundtrack. It's one of those movies where you just walk out needing the audio that played with this plot. Kanye West assisted in the song choices. It's eclectic in taste. You have the noise of Sleigh Bells “Crown on the Ground”, the M.I.A anthem “Bad Girls”, two Kanye contributions with “Power” and “All of the Lights”, a string of ratchet rap provided by Rick Ross (“9 Piece”) and 2 Chainz (“Money Machine”) and some cool R&B given to us through Frank Ocean's “Super Rich Kids”.

This movie is a 5 star experience. It's funny. It has a message to be taken away from it. It's 90 minutes long. Take your time out and see it.

Joyce's choice for a movie was Almost Famous. A movie I'd know of, but was not fully aware of. I'd wanted to see it. I was not disappointed.

I thought it starred Drew Barrymore. It starred Kate Hudson. I thought this was a Janis Joplin rise and fall of an almost star with Kate Hudson overdosing in the end a la The Rose. That was very wrong. This was a 70's inspired masterpiece. Think American Hustle.

A rock band that likes to have sex and party hard. A young journalist who hasn't been deflowered. A plane going down in the tragic tradition of Buddy Holly and Ricky Nelson. A homosexual identity revealed with a “I'm gay!” The quintessential explanation of what the seventies were. The late and great Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays a role that seems less a role, then real life.

It was nominated for four Oscars. It's practically a landmark in cinematography. Zooey Deschanel plays the role of the narrator's sister. She's giving us some Katy Perry realness and it makes me wonder how hard it would be to replace Katy with Zooey. They could be twins.

This is another movie with a killer soundtrack. It would have to be when it centers around a writer from Rolling Stone and his youthful exuberance. My sister swears on this soundtrack, the way she swears on the soundtrack to Coyote Ugly. The soundtrack to Almost Famous won a grammy in it's category and features a who's who's of 70's inspiration. Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, Rod Stewart, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, David Bowie all make appearances. It's a soundtrack for every generation.

If The Bling Ring didn't capture your attention and Almost Famous seems tepid. I can't help you. These movies are tens across the board and the highlight of 2000 and 2013. Get your life together.

They're Back Pitches

The trailer has finally come out for the sequel of the decade.

Pitch Perfect will be slapping us in the face on May 15th of 2015. I'm ready. I have been ready. This movie is all I'm really living for. That and Madonna's new album and subsequent tour.

I've seen Pitch Perfect a million odd times. I was obsessed with this movie. I had Pitch Perfect viewing parties. I forced people to watch this movie. I would still force people to watch it. I love it. Of course I have the soundtrack. If you don't have it, you are not acatastic. You are probably a member of the Sockapellas. I don't know what to say to you.

If you haven't seen this movie I can't be friends with you. Funny thing about that is that's something I said to Buttercup and it came true. This movie is also the reason I stopped talking to Miss Sara Bellum. This movie has systematically ruined my friendships.

It's like an addiction.

Now of course Sara Bellum and I are friends again. It did however put a deep riff in our friendship. We didn't talk for a good eight months? I don't know. I would tell you all the dirty details of why this severed our loving relationship, but honestly I don't remember what it was about. Like it was the high note that lost The Treblemakers the national championship, but it wasn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things. It just was the final breaking point.

This movie is the reason for a lot of my obsessions. I love Rebel Wilson, I even watcher her not very good show Super Fun Night, because of her role as Fat Amy. I have also danced like a mermaid, because of her. I am an embarrassment to society.

It also introduced me to Anna Kendrick, who is hysterical on twitter. I've said that before. I will say it everyday. I love her twitter account. She may not tweet a lot, but when she does you retweet it. You add it to your favorites. You embrace it as part of your family.

Then, there is Ester Dean who plays Cynthia Rose. The fiercest lesbian. Ester Dean is just a bad ass singer/songwriter. She's written for Beyonce, Rihanna, and Nicki Minaj. I repeat that she has written for BEYONCE. Once, you've written for Beyonce you can just die. Your life goals have been completed.

I might be a common white girl being obsessed with Pitch Perfect the way I am. After all everyone was obsessed with this movie. I just love this movie so much. We are all ready for this sequel. This movie slays me. I do not mind saying that. I will be a common white girl. I wear scarves to school and I bought 1989 the day it came out. Sometimes you just got to be a stereotype.

The reason I did this throwback Thursday was so I would put it out there that Pitch Perfect 2 is coming to theaters in May, but knowing me I will end up doing a Media Monday article on the fact that my favorite movie is coming out, and then a Friday Favorites on how great this movie is. Be prepared for the onslaught.

Also Todrick Hall put out a very funny, Pitch Perfect parody, Bitch Perfect on YouTube in November. I love it and it also makes me very uncomfortable. You know Todrick. Embrace it or don't. I'm in between on that. I'm honestly not sure, which way I'm leaning.

Panthers On The Runway

There was a time when we had such things as supermodels. They were everywhere. They had personalities they stole the cover of the magazines, they dated rock stars, and their personal lives were all anyone talked of. They were the epitome of sophistication and glamor. Diva behavior.

Now, who do we have? Gisele remains atop her pedestal, even as she rode the final wave of being a Supermodel. There are a few new ones. Kate Upton and Cara Delevingne being the ones that spring to mind. There lives are far less tantalizing. The public has visceral knowledge of them. All my mother knows of Kate Upton is that she had that ever revealing Sports Illustrated cover a few years ago.

The 80's saw the creation of the supermodel and their high profile continued into the 90's. Shelly Hack, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Christie Brinkley, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Tyra Banks, and Heidi Klum. All were household names.

Some of these you may question. Who was Shelly Hack? Her 'supermodel' type fame predated the rise of the eighties with her ad campaigns in the 70's. Never the less it was her fame as a model that landed her a replacement role as Tiffany Welles on Charlie's Angels. Her look even now is associated with the beauty standards of the 70's.

Not all of these women's names may pop out to you, but a picture of any of them will catch your eye. These women reached the point where they weren't even regarded as people, but rather as images for sophistication, money. Any desirable quality society wanted them to possess.

In the eighties you even had 'the trinity'. A holy group of three women who were made up of Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington. These women could be recognized solely by their first names. It was Naomi. It was Linda. It was Christy. They worked it. They were fierce. They knew how to work the runway. They were all name cited by RuPaul in his only hit “Supermodel (You Better Work)”.

The power these women had were unprecedented. The amount of money they made was astounding. A supermodel was on every single cover of every single magazine. They were the Paris Hilton of the 80's and 90's, except instead of being on the cover of 99 cent tabloid. It was only high gloss for them. Vogue and Cosmopolitan. Although, the number of sex tips Cosmo throws them into good trashy fun.

Many supermodels elevate their fame as a result from their appearances in the Victoria Secrets fashion show. Tyra Banks and Gisele all benefited from it.

Tyra has spun off her fame into the brand that is America's Next Top Model as has Heidi Klum with Project Runway. Naomi Campbell, though she tried with The Face, no one watches it. We have better options.

That being said, she's still the only one to be mentioned in a Beyonce song. Do that Naomi Campbell walk.

Naomi Campbell more then any of them has done her best to be a name that will be remembered. Her unsuccessful recording career, her three attempts at writing fiction (The Swan being incredibly interesting), but more importantly. Her always questionable private life. The violence. The relationships. Her nude photos in Madonna's coffee table book Sex. The blood diamond, she didn't know was a blood diamond.

The question of whether supermodels are more then just there pretty looks is a question people have to answer for themselves. To make it in any industry and to elevate themselves to more then just another pretty girl on the cover of the magazine, implies an underlying cunning and drive I don't think most of us could understand.

I have respect for all of them. I miss the romanticism of the supermodel. It might have been that stereotype of “I won't get out of bed for less then $10,000” that led to their decline or just a shift in social view. But, someday. I hope we have another supermodel. One who truly is everywhere. Someone who really will dominate the world and not just skirt the outside of the bubble.
