The Hills Are Alive!

Two musical throwbacks in a row? Yes. After Grease I was inspired to watch The Sound of Music. Not so much inspired as I have to show you the culture that exists in this movie. Both Te Amo and Rosencrantz had never seen it. It was time to fix that. I also hadn't seem them yet this summer. And, I can also promo my video “The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of.... Shut Up I'm Trying To Talk Here” (I'm convinced this should be the title of the next Fall Out Boy hit).

What is there really to say about The Sound Of Music other then Gwen Stefani sampled “The Lonely Goatherd” in her hit “Wind It Up” from her last studio album The Sweet Escape? There's so much to say. I wish I'd known I was writing this and I would have taken notes.

Christopher Plummer slays by the way, I'm slick obsessed with him. He was kind of hot in this movie in a protective kind of way. If your into being sheltered and cared for. It's good. He was the stereotypical dad knows best.

This movie is so family friendly, wholesome, entertainment. That's why the soundtrack sold so many copies. This movie is built on reprisals of quality songs sung by different people. It can be a little much. This movie is almost three hours long. Thank God we have learned to cut movies down. Watching this again was an experience.
This was the star vehicle for Julie Andrews. Queen of Genovia. Julie Andrews was already a star, but this was the movie that solidified it all. She was the young nun Maria. This replaced Gone With The Wind as the highest grossing movie of all time. This was a cultural revolution the way Glee was.

The one thing this movie reminded me of is how much I hate children. They were all kind of terrible. The only thing that really warmed my heart is that Liesl didn't end up with that Nazi. Praise. The only love we need is between the outspoken governess and the stern captain.

Boomer told me that he hadn't seen it after I told him I watched this with Rosencrantz and Te Amo. I told him. I'm not watching it again. I need some time to recover. It's good, but it's a marathon.

This movie could have just been a sweet romantic comedy and then you get the Nazi's involved. That is such a mess. It's terrifying actually. The first part of the movie is Julie Andrews and Christopher Plumber realizing they belong together and the the second part is the entire family escaping Austria with the help of Uncle Max and a few spry nuns.
Picture
My favorite character and most certainly the person I would be if I was in this movie would be the Baroness. She's evil. But, she's not too evil. The worst thing she does is tell Maria that the Captian is in love with her. The horror of it all. She's manipulative, but she knows when she's beat. I love it. I have respect for her.

The Baroness was played by Eleanor Parker, who deserves a separate Throwback Thursday herself. She was Hollywood glamour. I enjoy her performances. She died a few years ago at the age of 91. I really like her. She was beautiful, she was sensual.
Now what makes this movie so classic and iconic. That I don't have the answer to. What made Gaga's rendition of “The Sound of Music” the highlight of The Academy Awards. It wasn't just her sterling vocals. It was the fact that this movie has a soft spot in the hearts of the world. If you haven't seen it, you need to, it's a cultural landmark. Is it my favorite movie, no. But, you can't trust someone who doesn't like The Sound of Music.

Grease Is The Word

There's nothing more iconic then Grease. It's one of those movies everyone has to see. There's not a single person who doesn't like this movie. You can't trust someone who doesn't like Grease. If they don't like this movie their obviously going through some mental issues that you don't have the time to help them work through.

This movie came out in the summer of 1978. Not only was the movie a smash, but it's soundtrack became the definitive Grease. It boasted the Frankie Valli led theme song “Grease”, two outings with Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta in the lead with “You're The One That I Want” and “Summer Nights”, along with the Olivia Newton John solo “Hopelessly Devoted To You”. It's no surprise that it went on to sell over 28 million copies worldwide.

I became a proud owner recently and I might I add that it was the best decision of my entire life. If you grew up with this movie in your life. You need the soundtrack. Anyone who decides to get rid of it should be hospitalized.

Of course I suffered through the movie again, so I could accurately throwback. Let's just start with that cartoon intro. I have a soft place for it in my heart. It's so cute and adorable. It's perfect actually. It invokes childhood and that's what this movie is for most of us.
Picture
I feel like the obsession that Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta had with one another was never really expressed well enough. Now don't get me wrong. John Travolta was kind of hot with that cigarette dangling out of his mouth. What happened to him. Neither of them aged particularly well, but Olivia is 66. She looks good, I just feel like John got his face pulled one too many times.
Picture
Rewatching this movie as an “adult” I caught so many things. Danny and Kenickie had there three friends. They acted a fool. They were basically the three stooges. All of the T-Birds acted out masculinity. Danny and Kenickie had that moment when they were like “I love you as a bro” and then they pretended to be chill. Because, real men don't have emotions or care about people. Whatever.

As a child I never caught that Rizzo was pregnant. Rizzo is honestly my favorite character. I understand and relate to her the most. She's a strong female. Who just kind of powers through with this strength. She's also queen bitch of the Pink Ladies and lord knows I need that jacket. My favorite song in the whole movie is “There Are Worse Things I Could Do”. She lists all these things that are terrible things, but the worst possible thing she can do is cry in front of Kenickie. I feel that on a spiritual level. There are plenty of boys that have made me cry, but I be damned if I'm going to cry in front of them.

The romance between Kenickie and Rizzo is also a lot closer to my heart. Kenickie is supposed to be this bad boy who has all this sex, but he lost his virginity to Rizzo. Do not be mistaken. When there in that car he says “it broke. I bought it in the 7th grade.” He's talking about a condom. He wanted to be cool. That's it. Rizzo decides it doesn't matter and they have sex.
Picture
Picture
Picture
When she gets pregnant and Kenickie finally finds out he wants to be there for her. Yes. He's excited when it turns out she isn't, but they're barely out of high school. That's not as douchey as it seems. I just love them. I love them so much.

This movie is problematic. There's no denying that. However, watching it with a critical eye I realize that Sandy wasn't the only one changing. Danny tried changing for her. Danny at his core was a good guy. It was all the posturing with the T-Birds that made him act like an ass. Whenever, he hurt Sandy's feelings it was to impress them.
The only time I don't see why he was so insistent was when they were in the drive in movie and he kind of forced himself on her. That seemed unnecessary. It's the kind of thing Danny Zuko was supposed to do and that's why I think he acted on it.
Picture
He also tried sports for Sandy. He decided to go prep for Sandy at the end, and then Olivia Newton-John came out in that sexy skin tight black patent leather and slayed the world with that hair. Sandy made the change so she could be with Danny, but I really feel it was something she was comfortable doing. The reason her ears weren't pierced was because of her father. She was a good girl.
Picture
Picture
Sandy's friends and the people she aligned herself with were the delinquents. I think this transition was for her. Now, that doesn't mean this isn't problematic, but it's the way it is. It's also ironic that they both tried to change for each other when the theme song of Grease literally says “we can be who we are”.
Picture
The dance was pivotal. Marty through herself at the older announcer. Rizzo slayed up and down that fucking gym floor in that red spotted dress. I just love Stockard Channing. Killed it. Of course Danny fucked up again when he let himself dance with Cha Cha, who as Frenchie put it was “the best dancer at St. Bernadette's with the worst reputation.” Cha Cha was hot, though. I blame Danny and I also don't blame him.

Frenchie is the only one who made it in Grease 2 (and no we're not talking about that train wreck). She turned her hair a lovely shade of pink. She was sweet and loveable. Frankie Avalon sang to her and told her not to become a beautician unless she wanted to style hookers. Which, really sounds like a lot of fun.

The car scene where they raced on thunder roadvmade my day. I teared up a little. It was amazing. My father cut the “Greased Lightening” scene out of the VHS tape. I guess he didn't want me seeing John Travolta gyrating in suggestive manners. He didn't want me to get the wrong idea.

The only other thing about this movie that I just adored was how short the boys shorts were. To have been alive in the racist homophobic era of the fifties would have been so much fun.

Someday I hope to also be dressed in skin tight leather. A cigarette in my hand. Cue the music and say “Tell me about it. Stud.” And crush the cigarette under my stiletto. Grease is life goals

The Feminist Manifesto

Picture it.

It's 3:00 in the morning, I've just woken up from when I crashed at 8:00 the night before and the first thing I think of is Legally Blonde. Specifically the part where Elle says to Warner, “I'm never going to be good enough for you am I?”
Picture
I needed that. There's someone who's been making me feel really shitty recently. I feel like I'm not good enough or that I'm just this prop that they use when they're bored. I was even going through my twitter feed and I saw something I said. It was something along the lines of 'never try to convince someone of how fabulous you are'. And, I don't know if that's what I was doing, but I really needed Elle Woods to make me realize. That I am never going to be good enough for this person and that they don't care about me.

After this realization the only thing to do was to watch the movie. I didn't actually get to it at 3:00 that morning, but I did get to it later that night. I sat down with a bowl of grapes and orange juice and said to myself this is the most perfect snack for a movie. Except not really.
Picture
Hopefully, you remember Legally Blonde. My generation might be more attached to it then others. Reese Whitherspoon is in the lead. Everyone loves it. There was a musical. A sequel we don't need to talk about. The premise is that a beautiful blonde goes to law school to win her boyfriend back. When it's laid out like that it doesn't sound quite as amazing as it is. I guarantee you need to watch it. Forewarning that I took notes while watching this movie and that there will be spoilers.

This is the movie that decided the sorority I wanted to join. I wanted to be a Delta Nu just like Elle Woods (Reese Whitherspoon) and Brooke Taylor-Windham. Even if Brooke did get liposuction. Those hopes and dreams were ruined when my school didn't have a Delta Nu chapter among other inconsequential problems.
Warner is Elle's horrible, but reasonably hot boyfriend. Who dumps her and leaves her for icky Vivian Kensington. Who despite being in need of some mascara is not deformed. My favorite part of Warner breaking up with Elle is all the reasons comes up with him for leaving her. “Are my boobs too big?” “Am I too blonde???”
Picture
Warner is an ass and thank God, Elle realizes that she will never take him back. That said she does force her way into Harvard Law to get back with him. The best part is the video she filmed for it. If you've seen the movie, you remember the part where she objects to someone objectifying her and she says “I feel comfortable using legal jargon in every day life.”
Picture
Picture
Some of this movie is questionable.

Elle's dog is definitely a fave. He is a chihuahua. He wears a suit and tie at one point. His name is Bruiser. Which if that is not ironic, I don't know what is. He's basically the equivalent of Paris Hilton's Tinker Bell, except with a more masculine name. That dog is everything.
Picture
The manicurist also makes the movie. She's played by Jennifer Coolidge who was also in A Cinderella Story (the one with Hilary Duff). She's so funny. This is also where the iconic “bend and snap” came into pop culture. There is literally nothing about this role I don't like.
Picture
Picture
Picture
There is also so much good cleavage game. Reese Whitherspoon kills it in that bunny suit. Ali Larter also nails her cleavage. Like god damn. Racquel Welch also makes an appearance and I don't particularly remember her cleavage, but Racquel has amazing cleavage so I'm sure it's probably in there at some point.
Picture
Elle also solves a law case. Proving that you can be both smart and beautiful. And, that they are not mutually exclusive. Never forget the wise insight that “happy people just don't shoot their husbands”.

Legally Blonde is really just my childhood and it came to me in a time of need. When I needed guidance. When I needed someone to point out to me that I was not feeling good about myself. Elle Woods spoke to me and I just understood. Elle becomes valedictorian at the end and she says “you must always have faith in yourself”. I forgot that. I'm awesome and I let someone make me feel like I wasn't. If you have a person like that. This is my wake up call to you. Drop them. Fuck them. They are not worth it. You are fucking awesome and you don't deserve to have to put up with someone who brings you down.

Oh, Timbaland

Only true 90's kids remember Timbaland. Hopefully that's not true, it's Timbaland, he's kind of like the godfather of music. None of that's true. He's wonderful and I love him, but he wasn't the creator of any specific genre of music.

There's just something about Timbaland. I love his music. He's a relatively famous record producer. He's on the level of RedOne, Rick Rubin, Mike-Will-Made-It. He's been producing music since the 90's and he's behind some of the biggest names in hip hop. Timbaland is responsible for most of Justin Timberlake's musical output and he's a driving force behind Missy Elliot

Picture
Picture
He has this deep sexy voice, that has me obsessed. Someday when I'm a famous singer, he'll have to duet with me. Timbaland to me is sexy in like a Ruben Studdard kind of way. Like he isn't hot, but I feel him. You don't have to agree with me. I'm really weird.

There was a moment when Timbaland had a viable solo career. Hopefully, you remember this. He had two albums (Shock Value and Shock Value II respectively). Their set up in this very movie format way that I can't really explain. I'm definitely more of a fan of the first Shock Value. The second one might be more poppy, but Timb hid his vocals under it. And, I really like the raw factor that his unprocessed vocals have.
Picture
Picture
The first Shock Value featured “Give It To Me” and “The Way I Are”. Hopefully, you remember “Give It To Me”. It has Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake and it is just fun and sexy and everything you need in life. If you ever listen to the lyrics it also throws some serious shade, like damn. Then, you have “The Way I Are”, which really should be called “The Way You Are”, because what the fuck Timb. But, that's not the point. It had Keri Hilson on. Back when we didn't hate her. Back before she talked about Queen Bey in an offensive manner. Bye bitch. Stay in 2007.

The One Republic song “Apologize” is also on it, because yes Timbaland worked with One Republic. His second album really had that song “Carry Out” as a serviceable hit, but Shock Value II is fun.

Timbaland is also behind my favorite Nelly Furtado era. He's the one that relaunched her career. Because, she had that song “Like a Bird”, then her second album bombed. And, then she went slick R&B with “Promiscious” and we all loved it. Loose is an amazing album. Please go buy it if it is not in your collection.
Picture
He also worked with Madonna. You know. My queen. Critics tore apart the album they worked on together, but I love Hard Candy. Personally. I think it's really fun. It at the very least gave us “4 Minutes” and that song is everyone's shit.
Picture
As far as being the hot and in demand producer that he once was, he certainly isn't anymore. The only really noteable thing he's done recently is be the man behind the music for Empire. That's the album that kept Madonna's Rebel Heart from going number one. I haven't listened to the music, but I'm sure it's amazing. I really need to get on top of that show. Especially, because Raven Symone is in it.

In a just as important side note. Something is coming you way April 30th, so definitely check out the blog, to tell me how awesome I am.

Inanimate Objects Talking

1/29/2015

Most great kids movies have inanimate talking objects. You know Toy Story, Beauty and the Beast, I'm sure there are other ones. But, that would require me doing research or thinking about my childhood. God forbid. Feel free to add onto my list if you would like.

Recently, I have been rediscovering Sheryl Crow. Not that I ever lost her, but I just wasn't listening to her regularly. Me, freshman/sophomore year of high school all I listened to was Sheryl Crow. I still freaked out when her last album came out. I went from school to the store to buy it. Feels Like Home is everything.
Picture
That is not the point, though. In the first Cars movie Sheryl Crow contributed a song to the soundtrack called “Real Gone”. It's like an updated “Steve McQueen” and it is everything. Still obsessed with this song. I actually have the Cars Soundtrack, because of that one song. It is so good. I realize my music taste is questionable, but I stand behind this song.
Buy "Real Gone"
If you don't remember or haven't seen Cars you are depriving yourself. There are talking cars. Larry the Cable Guy is the voice of one of the characters. Paul Newman stepped out of retirement for this movie. It's from Pixar. I'm sure there are good life lessons in it.

I saw this movie at midnight when I was like ten. I was visiting my father. He was living in a different city at the time. And, he promised me he was going to take me to see Cars. But, he got off of work really late. When he got home he took me to go see Cars. At the expensive theater mind you. That's how I know my father loves me, because he spends money on me.
Picture
It was just a really great night and it's probably why I love Cars as much as I do. I don't have a lot of great memories with my father, but this is one of those. It's a good memory I have of him. Of course we had to go see Cars 2 when it came out.

We did not see it at midnight. And, might I add it was not as good as the first one. However, there is the one part about the wasabi, and one of the characters thought it was ice cream or something like that. And, whenever my father is about to eat too much of something hot, because he is a man's man, I tell him wasabi. I think it's funny. It makes me laugh. Other people probably don't get it.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
They are making a Cars 3, so of course we'll have to see that. Cars at this point is a generational movie when my little nephew lived with us. He watched Cars a lot. I mean on repeat. And, he specifically liked the opening sequence with the racing. I was fine with that, that's where they play Sheryl Crow's “Real Gone” and I would sing it at the top of my lungs. And, he probably thought I was really stupid, but that's okay.

My nephew was also exposed to Sheryl Crow. When his parents left, when my parents left. One day I told him I was going to educate him. He might have been two. But, I put on my five favorite Sheryl Crow albums and cleaned. I feel like I did him a great service.

Side note not to go out of your way to see Planes. It's like Cars except with planes. That race. It is a ridiculously bad movie and if they make another sequel I will go see it. So, there's that. I swear to god, though, if a sequel for Planes comes out before a sequel for The Incredibles Pixar will be getting some very nasty hate mail from me.

Mama Kelis

You know Kelis as the woman behind “Milkshake” and “Bossy”. I love her to death and I have taken to affectionately calling her Mama Kelis. Which, is really not a good idea. When, I went out to buy her latest album Food, I could not find it anywhere.
Picture
Picture
I asked a clerk if they had the Mama Kelis album Food and he looked it up and he said they didn't carry any artists named Mama Kelis. I had to explain to him that is just what I call her. I did end up getting the album. It came out the same day as when Iggy dropped The New Classic. If you read the Friday Favorites article last week you know how underwhelmed I was with that album.

Picture
Kelis to so many people is just a footnote in pop culture. She is more popular in Europe. Her first hit song was “Caught Out There” and the chorus is a screaming match of “I hate you so much right now!” She kills her man in the video. It kills. It was a minor hit in the United States, but over the seas it was immensely and launched her career.
Buy "Caught Out There"
Her second album was not even released in the United States. It was her third album Tasty that achieved the greatest chart success for her in her home country. It produced the ubiquitous “Milkshake” and is an all around great record.

Kelis is an albums artist. She releases fantastic works. All of her albums have received critical acclaim, the critics love her. Radio just tends not to. Even, when she turned to dance music for a little moment, radio said LOL. No.

That's too bad, because she's fantastic. You may also know Kelis for her marriage with nasty Nas. That boy. I kind of love their love, but it was ratchet. The music they did together, though. Oh, my god. They were having good sex. I am sure of it. Listen to either “In Public” or “Blindfold Me” and you will be like god damn.
Buy "In Public"
Buy "Blindfold Me"

It is steamy. It is hot. It's nasty of course. Their collaborations are everything. The reason I probably refer to Kelis as Mama Kelis now is that since she had her child the music has changed. Not in a bad way. I love it all, but when she was doing the music video for “Acapella ” if you find that the reason her life is no longer acapella is because of her baby.

She's also a very mature 35. I see her as a vivacious sexy mother figure. I'm not really sure why. I love Jenny Lewis and I hardly call her Mama Jenny and she's almost forty. There's just this deep love between me and Kelis. I want everyone to love her.
Speaking of that. I love Food, but if you are not into soulful retro R&B, stay far away. Go for the more contemporary Tasty or Kelis Was Here. If you want that dance music pick up Flesh Tone. She also supplied these fizzy seductive vocals to a fantastic Calvin Harris song, “Bounce”.
Picture
Picture
Buy "Bounce"
Critically speaking Kelis Was Here was nominated for a Grammy award for best contemporary R&B album, so I suppose it's better then Tasty. I would disagree. Kelis Was Here did not win, but she was up against Beyonce and it's Beyonce. Like if Kelis had won. She would have been murdered. No one beats Beyonce. That doesn't happen.

Hopefully you have been reminded of “Milkshake” if nothing else and honestly. If that's all Kelis ever contributes to pop culture. Her stay has been more then welcome.

Panthers On The Runway

There was a time when we had such things as supermodels. They were everywhere. They had personalities they stole the cover of the magazines, they dated rock stars, and their personal lives were all anyone talked of. They were the epitome of sophistication and glamor. Diva behavior.

Now, who do we have? Gisele remains atop her pedestal, even as she rode the final wave of being a Supermodel. There are a few new ones. Kate Upton and Cara Delevingne being the ones that spring to mind. There lives are far less tantalizing. The public has visceral knowledge of them. All my mother knows of Kate Upton is that she had that ever revealing Sports Illustrated cover a few years ago.

The 80's saw the creation of the supermodel and their high profile continued into the 90's. Shelly Hack, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Christie Brinkley, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Tyra Banks, and Heidi Klum. All were household names.

Some of these you may question. Who was Shelly Hack? Her 'supermodel' type fame predated the rise of the eighties with her ad campaigns in the 70's. Never the less it was her fame as a model that landed her a replacement role as Tiffany Welles on Charlie's Angels. Her look even now is associated with the beauty standards of the 70's.
Picture
Shelly Hack along with original angel Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd
Not all of these women's names may pop out to you, but a picture of any of them will catch your eye. These women reached the point where they weren't even regarded as people, but rather as images for sophistication, money. Any desirable quality society wanted them to possess.

In the eighties you even had 'the trinity'. A holy group of three women who were made up of Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington. These women could be recognized solely by their first names. It was Naomi. It was Linda. It was Christy. They worked it. They were fierce. They knew how to work the runway. They were all name cited by RuPaul in his only hit “Supermodel (You Better Work)”.
Picture
The "Trinity"

The power these women had were unprecedented. The amount of money they made was astounding. A supermodel was on every single cover of every single magazine. They were the Paris Hilton of the 80's and 90's, except instead of being on the cover of 99 cent tabloid. It was only high gloss for them. Vogue and Cosmopolitan. Although, the number of sex tips Cosmo throws them into good trashy fun.

Many supermodels elevate their fame as a result from their appearances in the Victoria Secrets fashion show. Tyra Banks and Gisele all benefited from it.

Tyra has spun off her fame into the brand that is America's Next Top Model as has Heidi Klum with Project Runway. Naomi Campbell, though she tried with The Face, no one watches it. We have better options.

That being said, she's still the only one to be mentioned in a Beyonce song. Do that Naomi Campbell walk.
Picture
Naomi Campbell more then any of them has done her best to be a name that will be remembered. Her unsuccessful recording career, her three attempts at writing fiction (The Swan being incredibly interesting), but more importantly. Her always questionable private life. The violence. The relationships. Her nude photos in Madonna's coffee table book Sex. The blood diamond, she didn't know was a blood diamond.

The question of whether supermodels are more then just there pretty looks is a question people have to answer for themselves. To make it in any industry and to elevate themselves to more then just another pretty girl on the cover of the magazine, implies an underlying cunning and drive I don't think most of us could understand.

I have respect for all of them. I miss the romanticism of the supermodel. It might have been that stereotype of “I won't get out of bed for less then $10,000” that led to their decline or just a shift in social view. But, someday. I hope we have another supermodel. One who truly is everywhere. Someone who really will dominate the world and not just skirt the outside of the bubble.

The Art Of Sex

11/8/2014

There are so many good reasons to hate someone. Their sexuality shouldn't be one of those reasons. This applies everything. Their skin tone, their gender, their religion. These are not good reasons to hate anyone.
Picture
I have been considering doing an over arching throwback on a subject for a while. When I was writing for another blog, I did one on marijuana. That was fun. I did another on abuse. This didn't even start out as a throwback. I wanted to write about Pussy Riot for a Media Monday. It just didn't happen.

If you haven't heard of them, you should look them up. Basically, they are these group of Russian women who are fighting for rights in Russia. The media focuses most of their attention on the feminist and LGBT side of the group, however they protest for other basic human rights as well. They are very interesting and inspirational women.
Picture
Madonna with two members of Pussy Riot
This article really got started due to Hozier and his song “Take Me To Church”. The song is beautiful and well written. It's definitely worth a listen if you haven't yet. However, it really was the music video that moved me. It told the story of a closeted gay couple in Russia, and the physical violence that results when its discovered that one of them is gay.

I don't know how this did not garner some form of attention. It's a stunning, relevant video. I love Iggy and her Clueless themed “Fancy”. But, “Take Me To Church” is art. It is what pop culture is for to get a conversation started.

I found the video to be so moving I was going to do a whole throwback on Hozier. His influences alone would have made for an interesting article on. Van Morrison, Jackie Wilson, Jeff Buckley. Even, Bon Iver, although he is a little too current for a throwback.
Buy "Take Me To Church"
Picture
Before the 90's there was very little gay support in media. Gloria Gaynor's “I Will Survive” may be considered a gay anthem, but it wasn't directed towards that purpose. Gay rights came to head when everything else was coming up. Women's rights, black rights. All these rights movements and it was put on the back burner.

This is not a criticism of how it was handled, because it is certainly not. There was a lot happening and you have to pick what you can focus on. The 90's, though was when it became more talked about. I don't want to say accepted.

Although, you did see the emergence of RuPaul. A black drag queen into social media. He became the face of MAC cosmetics, had a stint as talk show host on VH1, and his signature song “Supermodel (You Better Work)” that thrust him into the spotlight. It says something about he 90's that this was allowed to happen. Still, he never did have that top ten hit. He never truly became an A-List star.

Madonna was also influential in the 90's. As she is today. Something I feel like people do not realize about Madonna, or at least people my age. Is what she's done for us. Madonna has always supported gay rights, she has pushed feminism forward. Madonna has changed the world and we sometimes get too lost up in the controversy to realize that. More then once in the nineties, Madonna opened up the conversation to the public. Her hit song “Deeper and Deeper” is about a boy who comes to terms with his homosexuality, and even the broader all encompassing “Secret” dealt with these kind of issues.

These were mainstream hit songs, in the times when MTV still ruled the world. She was forcing America to look at it.

No matter how much I like Lady Gaga or any of the other pop stars who support LGBT rights. Now its almost popular to support gay rights. Madonna did it when it wasn't in vogue. She did it because she thought it was the right thing to do. She thought it would make a difference and it did.

One of the many things I hold against Katy Perry despite her stated support of gay rights, is “I Kissed A Girl” and “Your So Gay”. In one album. It presented the concept of: lesbians are hot, gay boys disgusting. She used this for her own fame. She may not have meant it that way, but its how it comes across. It honestly would not surprise if born and raised Christian girl Katy Perry did not like gays. It really would not. It would not shock me or make me dislike her more then I already do. It was the same with Paula Deen. Was anyone really that surprised that good old southern Paula Deen was racist.

It shouldn't have.

Before the 90's there really weren't any mainstream movies about the gay 'agenda'. Don't you love how the agenda is that they want to be married. What a terrible thing the gays are trying to do. They will bring down America with all this marriage.

Now there was The Rocky Horror Picture Show, that movie is really rough. No plot. No point. Really. You could argue that the underlying point is to allow for sexual freedom, but who really knows what that movie is about.

During and after the 90's there were a string of movies made about gay culture: The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, Saved!, Brokeback Mountain, But, I'm A Cheerleader, GBF.

You might not have heard of a few of these movies, but some are mainstream. The Adventures of Priscilla is a funny movie. Two drag queens and a transexual cross Australia in bus. You should need no more convincing.

Then, you have both Saved! and But, I'm a Cheerleader. The first tells the story of a girl who tries to save her gay boyfriend by having sex with him. Believing it is the Lord's will, she doesn't realize she will get pregnant, or that he's still gay. With supporting roles played by Mandy Moore and Macauley Caulkin it's surprisingly heartwarming if tempestuously dull.
Then, you have But, I'm a Cheerleader. The premise being about a girl who is sent away to gay camp in order to get back on the right path. They complete typical gender related tasks in order to get the gay away. Of course with RuPaul as one of the counselors and sexy Eddie Cibrian running around. No one is truly getting rid of the gay.
Picture
Of course you've heard of Brokeback Mountain. You know Heath Ledger is in it. It's a great movie. The thing about it that troubles me is that it is so often referred to as a 'gay' movie. When these men are bisexual, not gay. There is a difference.

This movie was watched in GBF (Gay Best Friend) when one of the mother's tries to convince her son that she is okay with him being gay. It is basically the 2010's attempts at a Clueless or Mean Girls. One of the boys is outed and the three leading prom queen contenders battle over him to gain the upper edge in the polls. All the obvious flaws you are seeing with this movie are supposed to be there. It's about realizing that just because someone's gay doesn't make them any less human with any less feelings.
Picture
Picture
And, there are other movies of course. These are just the ones I have seen. Milk I've been told is a great movie about gay rights activist and politician Harvey Milk. You probably know I feel about Sean Penn, which is why I haven't made a point of seeing it. And, of course the documentary Paris Is Burning is a must see. People still quote all the time. Brooke Candy in “Opulence”, even RuPaul took his “Shantay, Sashay” from this movie. It's a classic.

TV of course. The first mainstream, mention of homosexuality on TV had to be Three's Company. The only reason Jack is allowed to live with Janet and Chrissy is the fact that he isn't attracted to them. Which we all know isn't true. Now TV has gay relations on it all the time. Modern Family, Glee, White Collar.

It certainly is better. It has gone past the point of being under the conscious level, but don't let anyone tell you that there isn't discrimination against homosexuality. The fact that not every state has legalized gay marriage is an obvious point. There is no critical thinking involved in that. GBF was rated R. Actually all the movies I listed were rated R. I guarantee when you watch them you'll wonder how that happened. Some of them you'll be like, yes that deserved that rated R, and others you will just not understand.

Picture
Take other countries into account. Russia, Pakistan, Egypt. You cannot tell me that homosexuality is not persecuted because it is. It is the same thing as telling me racism does not exist. Are you kidding me. The people who fought discriminatory laws are still alive. The same oppressors are still around. There may be less violent racism, but it still happens. It's just not the same thing.

Is it better. You can make your mind up about that. I do think the younger generation is going to be a lot more accepting. The YouTube community being a prime example of that. Young people watch YouTubers and the fan base of Tyler Oakley, Superfruit, Troye Sivan are obvious points to favor this.

Do not change who you are for anyone. Home is where you are. You do not need people who do not support you. If you're parents do not like gays. Fuck them. You don't need to tell them. Move out. Become your own person. You don't need parental permission.

It really upsets me that it would be impossible to tell my parents thatf I was gay. They would freak out. It would be a major issue. That's heartbreaking parents. They wouldn't love me anymore. I would be a disappointment. That's not sort of upsetting. It's horrific that this is how my parents would feel about it.

Me over here in my intro to pysch class has learned that trying to change your sexuality is not a good thing to do. It is very unhealthy. It causes depression. Don't change yourself. Accept who you are. And, realize that there are people on your side. Even, if you can't reach out to them, even if you can't verbally acknowledge something it is okay. It will get better.

T.G.I.F. (Thank God I'm Fergie)

Has the world waited longer for anything more then the return of Fergie and Gwen Stefani? Gwen made a recent appearance in a mildly entertaining duet “My Heart Is Open” on Maroon 5's new set V. Still announcements of an upcoming album from her have yet to appear.

Dutchess Fergie on the other hand recently dealt us a blow with “L.A. Love”, which you may or may not have heard on the radio. Now, we all l loved The Black Eyed Peas. I enjoyed “Boom Boom Pow”, “Meet Me Halfway”, “Imma Be” and “I Gotta Feeling” as much as the rest of the world. But, what I yearned for was a follow up to The Dutchess.

Over the course of eight years since “London Bridges”. We saw a re-release of The Dutchess that included four extra tracks “Labels or Love”, “Barracuda”, a duet with Nelly, “Party People”, and a remix of “Clumsy”.

We saw a misfitted dance pulse of “Feel Alive” on a Step Up Soundtrack and euphoric party peak of “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got)” for The Great Gatsby movie. The song is the reason for why I bought the soundtrack. And, Lana Del Rey's “Young and Beautiful” goes without mention.

2006 was a great year. Fergie ruled. Just think about. The start of the reign with “London Bridge”. The heavy sexual innuendo of that song was lost on me for a good bit of time. It took me a while. Just like Flo Rida's “Right Round”. That song is nasty. I can't listen to it the same way, now that I know. What I know about that song.

Then, came “Fergalicious”. What happens when you combine “Fergie” with “Delicious” apparently. The ubiquitous song set in the candy factory and also the song I got turnt to at prom. I thank this song for my life choices, for my excellence in grammar. Where Gwen Stefani taught me how to spell “B-A-N-N-A-N-A”. Fergie with the assistance of Will.I.Am instructed me on “D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S” and “T-A-S-T-E-Y”.

That explains a lot about my English grades.

Finally “Glamorous” came to us. A video with guns and gangsters and Ludacris. That was the last time that man was relevant to me. Actually that's not entirely true. I was very intrigued by his reworking of the classic “Barbie Girl” song into “Party Girl”. And, as he instructed. If you ain't got no money, take your broke ass home.

With “Big Girls Don't Cry” we finally got the hit ballad every pop star needs. Just like Madonna needed “Crazy For You” and “Live to Tell” or Rihanna has requisites of “Take a Bow” and Stay” every great pop star has released a ballad to great critical acclaim at some point in their career. That is what “Big Girls Don't Cry” was for Fergie. I still know every word. It's just like when “Back to December” comes on the radio, I like to pretend I hated it, but I can still sing every word from memory. This song needs no reminders. Although, I do wonder if Sia heard of it. Her song is “Big Girls Cry” and Fergie's is “Big Girls Don't Cry”. Where is the lie?

Clumsy was the final hit off the album that we all now. My mother is obsessed with this song. My mother loves Fergie. I just don't love this song, the way the world does. I like it. I wouldn't change the radio station. But, it is not my jam for life.

This album is classic. If you don't have it. You must not enjoy pop culture. Besides the obvious tastemakers. Album only tracks “Pedestal” (A venemous diss off) and “Here I Come” are all reason enough to buy the album. My mother also thoroughly enjoys the closing ballad “Finally”. It's a little too syrupy sweet for me, but if my mother likes it. Fergie likes it. I might just be missing something. I do thoroughly enjoy a hidden part at the end, that consists of a minute of “Maybe, we can take a real long ride...”. I can't imagine what she's suggesting.

Eight years after The Duchess was released everything on it is still fresh and relatable. It's no wonder the world is clamoring for new Fergie music. The only way our appetites have been whetted is by her work with The Black Eyed Peas. But, after a four year break from the Peas. We need Fergie.
Picture
This extended stay away from the spotlight has moved Fergie from the dutchess to the Queen. And, Queen Fergie recently dropped “L.A. Love”. One of the slickest hip-hop productions to come around in recent times. The album is coming. Be prepared world. She's ready. And, she's coming for you.

Good Christian Bitches

Thank God for GCB. This show saved my life. I miss it so much. There was only one season, and two years later I still want this show back.

The real problem this show had was that it was a mid-season replacement for Pan-Am. You remember that retro show about the stewardesses. That was just one of the many retro shows they tried to do that year. All the stations were trying to capitalize on the popularity of Mad Men. Every single one of those shows was canceled. I even liked the one NBC did, The Playboy Club. Amber Heard was in it and she is so sexy. Then, Eddie Cibrian was in it.

I guess middle America wasn't ready for all that sex. I was. I saw every single episode. Granted, that show didn't even make it to the mid-season mark. They canceled after three episodes? Tragedy.

Picture
Picture
This all happened the year that Desperate Housewives was in its final season. And, with the cancellation of Pan-Am they had to find a mid-season replacement. GCB originally titled “Good Christian Bitches” until it was deemed to inappropriate.

The issue came in that this show came in right after Desperate Housewives. It was originally meant to be a replacement for Desperate Housewives the following year, but after the cancellation of Pan-Am it got pushed forward.

The way the Sunday line up worked was, Desperate Housewives, then GCB. It was basically two hours of the same show. There are some undeniable similarities, and people did not have time for that. We were all broken up over this being the final season of Desperate Housewives to care about this new show.
Picture
Picture
Of course I watched. I wasn't supposed to. I also wasn't supposed to watch Desperate Housewives but that isn't the point. My parents didn't want me watching it because it slandered good christian people. Just like I wasn't supposed to watch The Playboy Club but I did anyway.
Picture
That was another problem, GCB had was that it offended the staunch christian conservatives. If they actually watched the show they would have realized it wasn't making fun of Christians and that it made some very good points. But, that is just my opinion.
Picture
Picture
The central premise of the show was that Amanda (Leslie Bibb) is moving back to Texas to live with her over bearing mother Gigi (Annie Potts) after her husband dies in a car crash biting off more then he can chew. Amanda was the mean girl in high school and all of the girls she picked on our out to ruin her life. This includes Carlene Cockburn (Kristen Chenoweth), Cricket Caruth-Reilly (Miriam Shor), and Sharon Peacham (Jennifer Aspen). There's also sweet darling Heather Cruz (Marisol Nichols) who can't find a man, but she's not really pitted against anyone.

For the record Cricket does not have herpes.

Amanda despite the fact that she is living with her mother refuses to let her pay for things, and ends up working at Boobylicious as a waitress. To the scandal of the entire church set- and her mother. This show was dirt. This show was high stakes drama and humor. It was great.

What ABC kept forgetting is that Sunday nights are a tough time slot. They cancellled the next two shows they put in the 10/9 central time slot, because they got worse ratings then GCB. Of course I shamelessly watched both of them. 666 Park Avenue was great. Vanessa Williams was in it. That's all you need to know. It's about a creepy apartment run by the devil and Vanessa Williams was in it. Need I say more.
Picture
Picture
The next show they replaced that with was Red Widow. To be honest I only saw the first episode, and not even the whole thing. The show was not that good. I would have been thoroughly irritated if they cancelled GCB for this show. Its been two years, but ABC needs to bring GCB back. The problem I feel now is that all of these women are not just sitting around waiting for roles.

These people have other jobs. We couldn't get the original cast back together and there would be no point, then. I want it back so badly. You need to watch it, even if it's just for Cricket's gay husband Blake. Mark Deklin embodies sex. Swooning right here.

The women of this show are attractive. But, Blake. Oh, dear god. I can't even. Also, I realize the show ended on a “cliff hanger”. Yes and no. Only one thing wasn't resolved. But, we have all watched TV enough to know what the end result was going to be. This is a spoiler I suppose, but the world saw it coming. Amanda kisses the very hot pastor while they're in Mexico. That is the one thing that is unresolved.

At the same time. If season two had happened they would have tried to hide their love, eventually dated, decided it was too complicated, and somewhere near the end of season 8 finally realized they loved each other all along and gotten married. That's what would have happened.
Picture

Netflix this bitch. Buy the first season on DVD, because those liars at ABC mislead us and labeled it as the complete first season even though they had no intention of renewing it for a second.

There is always the chance it will come back. This show received the largest online petition ever to save a show. Wendy Williams rallied around to get this show saved. It could happen. Remember how The Game was canceled for two years? If not you have ten wonderful episodes to watch. Embrace it and thank God for good christian bitches.

Side note: GCB was inspired by the similarly titled book by Kim Gaitlin. The show is a loose interpretation of the book and its not my favorite book by a long stretch, however it is a good fun quick little read. So, that's definitely something to check out if you like the show.
